My Search for a Service Dog

How do places like the Seeing Eye or other service dog operations weed out all those cute little puppies for their programs? My own search for a pup that I could train myself (yes, the ADA allows you to train your own service dog) has taken the better part of five years.

I've done a great deal of research into breeds and what makes a good candidate, what little tests I could do when meeting puppies. But the overall search has been exhausting. I have tried shelters and rescues, and could write an entire book on the hoops rescues make you jump through. Don't get me wrong, I know they're trying to find suitable homes. But I hear of so many experienced applicants being turned down for the most ridiculous reasons--and with so many dogs in already overcrowded shelters! But I digress...

I've come to the conclusion that I will probably have more potential for success by finding a breeder with extensive knowledge of their lines, both health and temperament. A pup young enough to socialize properly. A dog who will bond with me, who will sense when I'm having good or bad days. I'm looking forward to this new chapter and will keep you posted on who the lucky pup turns out to be.
